Things to consider if a foreign citizen plans to get married in Italy

When someone plans to get married in another country, Italy always gets a spot on the list. The country's history, several great locations, exquisite food, and a lot of other things make Italy one of the best wedding destinations. If you're planning your wedding in Tuscany, Italy and you're unaware of the requirements and rules that can help you get married legally there, this article can help.

Can a foreign citizen get married in Italy?

Italy has no restriction for foreign citizens who are willing to get married in the country. Article number 116 of the Italian Civil Code states that any foreign citizen can get married in Italy. As per your country's law, you'll be married by a consular or the authority and the process is different in every country. Italy's process is quite different for foreign citizens and the marriage is celebrated by a state official or a Catholic priest. If the wedding is non-Catholic, you can still get married with the above two procedures but you have to make sure that you're not breaking any civil laws of the country.

What documents are required?

As a foreign citizen, you have to show the following documents to the Municipal officer for your wedding in Dolomites, Italy, or anywhere else in the country:

  • ID proof with international validity, you can show your passport too.
  • Long-form of the birth certificate that even contains the name of the parents
  • Certification of no impediment (also called "nulla òsta" in Italy)
  • If it's your second marriage, then you have to show the paperwork proving the termination of your previous wedding along with the marriage certificate

What if you’re not able to get all the documents?

In some cases, the authorities of the country of the visitor refuse to produce the certifications. There is no need to panic as you can still get married in Italy. If the foreign citizen is not breaking any rules of Italy, the person can still obtain the nulla òsta. All you need to do is bring it to a Court.

How will you plan the wedding after getting all the documents?

You must consign all documents to your Municipality register office. Then you have to wait till the banns of matrimony are finally published. Once the banns get published, you can get the Certificate of Bann Publicatio. Also, the time taken for publishing the banns is not more than 8 days.
